The Heartland Trail (CNR39 Bikeway Project)

Access by foot or bike to and from the east.

This project provides a paved pedestrian/bike path that connects Stevens Point to sidewalks, trails, and roads to the east. The difficulty of crossing US Highway 51/Interstate 39 to travel east of Stevens Point by foot or bike stimulated discussion and the formation of a task force in 2005 to investigate, plan, and implement a solution in the form of a ped/bike bridge over or path under the 4-lane, controlled access highway. A plan was devised to construct a path that connects Joerns Drive in the Stevens Point Business Park (off Country Club Drive) with Copps Drive in the Portage County Business Park under I39 at the Canadian National Railway underpass adjacent to Old Highway 18. This is information currently available that describes this plan and construction of the Trail:
